چکیده

Zug, George R., Addison H. Wynn, and Carol Ruckdeschel. Age Determination of Loggerhead Sea Turtles, Caretta caretta, by Incremental Growth Marks in the Skeleton. Smithsonian Contributions to Zoology, number 427, 34 pages, 9 figures, 6 tables, 1 appendix, 1986.—Periosteal growth in the skeleton of Caretta caretta is cyclic and produces a record of distinct bony layers (growth marks). These layers are most apparent in the long bones, particularly the humerus and femur. Correlative evidence supports the production of one layer (i.e., growth increment) each year in some reptiles, and the annual nature of each bony layer is an explicit assumption in our estimation of ages of Caretta from Cumberland Island, Georgia. Sections from the shafts of humeri were prepared with standard histological techniques, and the marks of skeletal growth were counted and measured. Owing to resorption of the early periosteal layers, determination of number of growth marks and, hence, age requires an extrapolation from the remaining marks to total growth marks produced during the life of the turtle. Various age estimates are possible; the most reliable are derived from the narrowest axis of the humerus sections and suggest that, on the average, Georgia Caretta attain sexual maturity in their thirteenth to fifteenth years, with some individuals possibly maturing as early as six years and others as late as their twenty-fifth year. Since the average age of maturity agrees with the results of a mark-recapture study in a neighboring Florida population, the value of the skeletochronological technique and its assumptions are confirmed. The technique is not advocated as a method for the age determination of individual sea turtles, but does provide statistical age estimates for different size classes of turtles. Back-calculating length from skeletal growth marks in loggerhead sea turtles Caretta caretta

Growth rates within and among sea turtles are highly variable, and gaining an understanding of this variability is difficult using traditional means, such as mark–recapture. Skeletochronology is becoming a standard technique for the assessment of individual growth rates in sea turtles. Here we present an analysis of the relationship between humerus diameter and somatic growth in loggerhead sea ...

First report of the epizoic red alga Polysiphonia carettia (Hollenberg, 1971) on the loggerhead turtle Caretta caretta in the Adriatic Sea

Sea turtles are widely distributed in temperate and tropical seas, and their carapace is often colonized by species of macroalgae. There have been several studies on the epibionts of loggerhead turtles, Caretta caretta Linnaeus, from different parts of the world (KITSOS, et al., 2005; PFALLER et al., 2006, 2008). The carapaces of loggerhead turtles represent an important substratum for a variet...

Estimates of survival probabilities for oceanic-stage loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) in the North Atlantic

Estimates of instantaneous mortality rates (Z) and annual appar ent survival probabilities (Φ) were generated from catch-curve analyses for oceanic-stage juvenile loggerheads (Caretta caretta) in the waters of the Azores. Two age distributions were analyzed: the “total sample” of 1600 log gerheads primarily captured by sight ing and dipnetting from a variety of vessels in the Azores between ...

Carapace epibionts of loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) nesting at Canaveral National Seashore, Florida

A survey of the epibionts inhabiting the carapace of loggerhead sea turtles Caretta caretta (Linnaeus) nesting on Canaveral National Seashore, Florida was conducted from 2003–2004. Epibionts were sampled and identified to the lowest taxonomic level possible. Eleven newly documented epibiont species were observed from 52 individual loggerheads. We present the first records of sea urchins as logg...

Somatic growth function for immature loggerhead sea turtles, Caretta caretta, in southeastern U.S. waters

Somatic growth functions are critical parameters for understanding the life history of a species and for developing management plans for wild populations. Substantial effort has been invested in—and considerable information on growth rates has been gained from—mark-recapture studies of sea turtle populations (Chaloupka and Limpus, 1997; Chaloupka and Musick, 1997; Limpus and Chaloupka, 1997; Bj...
